the best guys have the worst text game
tldr: The exact traits that make you successful at work (thoroughness, effort, genuine interest, taking things seriously) invert into desperation over text. This is Signal Inversion Theory: the online medium flips your best qualities into your worst signals, which is why lawyers and doctors get left on read while the guy with a bathroom selfie cleans up.
I used to be the guy this whole post is about.
Good job. Fit. Independent. Solid friends. I did everything right in the parts of life you can study for. And I was getting left on read by women I'd met an hour earlier.
For a long time I thought the problem was that I wasn't impressive enough. So I got more impressive. It made things worse. That's the part nobody tells you. The better you get at your life, the worse you tend to get at texting. Not despite your strengths. Because of them.
I call it Signal Inversion Theory. The online medium takes the exact traits that made you successful and flips them into the exact signals that make you unattractive. Same input. Inverted output. It's the underpinning philosophy behind every text The Guy App helps you write, and once you see it you can't unsee it.
Here are the five ways your best qualities are quietly killing you.
why does being thorough make you look desperate over text?
At work, thoroughness is the whole game. It's the thing that separates you from the guy phoning it in. You catch the detail nobody caught. You cover the base nobody covered.
Over text, thoroughness reads as over-invested.
You wrote three paragraphs. You referenced her bio. You asked her a question that requires a paragraph to answer. You thought effort would set you apart. It set you apart in the wrong direction. She's replying in four words and you're replying in four sentences. The math tells her everything.
This is the same reason referencing her bio is a trap. You saw she likes hiking. You mentioned a trail. You thought that was thoughtful. You became the 40th guy today who also loves hiking. Thorough isn't a flex here. It's a tell.
why does caring about the outcome sabotage you?
You rewrite the text. You read it back. You edit it again. You send it. Then you check your phone every thirty seconds.
She can feel all of that. Not the words. The energy behind the words. Investment has a smell and the phone carries it.
Meanwhile the "loser" with a random bathroom selfie who clearly spent zero seconds on his profile is cleaning up. Not because he's superior. Not because he got red pilled. Because he genuinely does not care about the outcome. He sends the text like he has fifty other things going on, because he does. That's not a strategy. That's just his Tuesday.
The moment you decide the outcome matters, you start playing it safe, and playing it safe is the sabotage. The guy who has nothing to lose sends the better text every single time.
why does being thoughtful come across as try-hard?
Here's where the good guys really trip. You're not lazy. You want to send something clever. Something edgy but not offensive. Funny but not too much. So you sand every corner off it until it lands in the mushy middle and dies.
The effort is the problem. Not the aim. The effort itself.
BEFORE: Hey Sarah! I saw you're into pottery and travel, that's such a cool combo. I actually did a ceramics class in Lisbon last year, would love to hear what got you into it. How's your week going so far?
AFTER: you look like the type to lie about liking hiking
The first one took you eight minutes. Three interests referenced. Two questions. A compliment. It's a cover letter with a photo attached. She read it once and felt nothing.
The second one took four seconds. It's dumb. It's a little rude. It's a guess about her, not an interview of her. And she can respond to it in half a second with "excuse me I LOVE hiking" and now you're talking like two people, not like an applicant and a hiring manager. The best text should feel like the first thing that crossed your mind, typed in five seconds, sent before you thought better of it.
is genuine interest actually attractive over text?
In person, on a date, interest is gold. She wants you to ask about her day, her work, her family. Curiosity across the table feels like warmth.
Two messages into a chat with a total stranger, that same curiosity reads as needy. You're running interview mode on someone you've never met. "What do you do? Where are you from? What are you passionate about?" Every question is a small demand for information from a person who owes you nothing yet.
Heavy investment right away is the thing to avoid. Not because caring is bad. Because caring this early, before there's anything to care about, tells her you'd care about anyone. This is the whole reason nice guys get ghosted, and it's not what most guys think. The interest isn't the turnoff. The timing of it is.
why does taking it seriously read as boring?
You're treating the conversation like a job interview. Like something you need to land or your life stays incomplete. You're basically submitting a formal application requesting she please consider going on a date with you.
Skip the application stage entirely.
Text her like you've already been dating a year. Like you're mid-conversation about some inside joke. A pigeon pooped on my blazer in Italy once, on a date. That's the register I mean. Not "how was your weekend," but the pigeon. Start from the inside joke that doesn't exist yet and build backward.
Because here's the reality of the medium. If you met on Hinge or, God forbid, Tinder, she has fifty guys a day already submitting the formal application. Polished. Serious. Identical. You do not want to win that competition. You want to not be in it. This is closer to how texting like a virgin gets you more dates than the smooth operator ever will. The seriousness is the boring part.
what is signal inversion theory actually saying?
Run the five back to back and the pattern is obvious.
Thorough reads as over-invested. Caring reads as desperate. Thoughtful reads as try-hard. Genuine interest reads as needy. Serious reads as boring.
Every one of those is a trait you want in your actual life. It's how you keep friends. It's how you get promoted. It's how you build something real. None of it is a character flaw. It's the exact opposite. It's your character working exactly as designed, in the wrong environment.
The environment is the variable. The online medium inverts the signal. Text and apps strip out tone, timing, body language, the sound of your voice, everything that would make thoroughness read as competence instead of desperation. What's left is just the raw investment level, and high investment early reads as low value. Every time.
This is the real red pill. Not "women love jerks." Not "hide your emotions." The actual insight is quieter and stranger: the medium is doing this to you, not women. It's why the more impressive you are, the worse you do. The lawyer and the doctor get left on read while the ungroomed guy who hasn't showered in two days is booking dates. Not because he's better. Because he's not trying, and not trying is the signal the medium rewards.
The Guy App exists to install that energy onto the guys who actually have something to offer. You don't need to become the bathroom-selfie guy. You just need to stop letting your best qualities file your paperwork. Keep the substance. Drop the application.
I wish someone had shown me this three years ago. I was committing every sin on this list, wondering why the resume wasn't landing the interview. Turns out I was applying to the wrong job with the wrong document the whole time.

video transcript
All right, so what I'm going to explain to you in this video is called the signal inversion theory. No hyperbole, this is almost certainly the greatest discovery in the history of online dating, and quite honestly, it's right up there with Newton's three laws of physics when it comes to the importance of this discovery.
Again, no hyperbole. But why I'm making this video today is that the signal inversion theory is the underpinning philosophy behind every text that The Guy app is going to help you craft. If you wanna learn more about that, link in the description. But first, I'm gonna go over the five key things that are sabotaging your text game.
It's very counterintuitive. But basically, everything that has made you successful in your career, everything that has made you fit and financially independent and help you build a good social life and all your values is actually quietly sabotaging you. So let's just get right into it. So number one...
Sorry, they're testing some alarm system here in Denver today. But number one, being thorough reads as being over invested over text. Now, in the workplace, being thorough is what separates you from someone who is just phoning it in. But over text, it just comes across as desperate, as needy, as having no options.
It's exactly what's helping you write three to four paragraphs to sell yourself to her. Meanwhile, she's responding with, like, four or five-word sentences, right? So you're referencing her bio, you're doing what we call homework openers by asking her questions that, you know, require her to put in a lot of effort.
It's just not fun. So you being thorough, you think you're navigating the text game correctly, but actually you're doing it completely wrong. The next thing here is caring about outcomes reads as being desperate. So you're rewriting your texts, and she can feel that energy. You're checking your phone every thirty seconds to see if she finally responded.
And she feels that energy, man. But meanwhile, the guy, the loser, quote unquote, who's just taking a random bathroom selfie and clearly didn't put any thought or effort into his profile, is killing it online. It's because he's not too invested, and he's not too concerned about the outcome. Not because he's superior, not because he's been red pilled, but because he just literally doesn't care.
Um, so that's number two. The more you care about the outcome, the more she can sense it, and it's quietly sabotaging your texts. You have to just not care and just send something like you've got nothing to lose. Number three here: being thoughtful reads as try hard. So you're trying to craft the perfect message.
You're trying to send something edgy and funny, but at the same time not offending her, and it's just kind of ending up in this mushy middle that basically the effort is the problem. Every text you send should be like it's the first thing you cross your mind, it took you five seconds to type it out, and then you hit send and went about your day.
The guys who succeed with the online texting are the ones who just really don't honestly care, and that effortless is what signals abundance. Now listen This video is very much theory. In future videos, we're gonna be going over what this means in practice, the types of texts not to send, and the types of texts you should be sending.
But here, at the end of the day, all I'll tell you for now is that I was this guy messing everything up. I was the dude who was committing all the sins I'm talking about in this video. So don't take this as me being preachy to you. Just take it to me as me wishing... This is basically what I wish I'd been able to see and hear two to three years ago.
Now, genuine interest, this is number four, genuine interest reads as needy, believe it or not. So in person, when you're on the date with the woman, interest is attractive. She wants you to ask her questions about her day, her life, her career, her family, all that type of stuff. But when you're two messages into the chat with a total stranger, that interview type mode questioning just leads- just reads as being needy, and, like, needing to know this type of infor- information from her.
So heavy investment right away is just what you want to avoid. So genuine interest, again, reads as needy over text. And again, this will all make sense as you subscribe to this channel, watch more of our videos. There's a lot of short form content also, which will help explain this more in the meantime.
But otherwise, on to number five, taking things seriously, especially in the early going, reads as boring. So you're treating this like a job interview. You're treating this like something you really need to land for your life to be complete. Um, so you're texting as if you're, you know, submitting a formal application to this woman so that she can please go on a date with you.
But the key thing here is that you should just bypass the formal application stage in the initial text interactions, and just start texting her like you've already been dating for a year, and you're telling her about some sort of inside joke about, like, a pigeon that took a poop on your blazer. This literally happened to me when I was in Italy with a, uh, girl recently.
So just keep that in mind. Start from an inside joke. Don't be acting like you're applying for a job. She can feel that energy. And dude, trust me, if you're meeting on the a- on the apps like Hinge or, God forbid, Tinder, she's got 50 dudes already per day probably applying. So you don't wanna compete in that domain.
But here's the thing, it's not... This is the red pill, guys. Once you realize these five things... Again, let me just go over it real quick. Um, for most of these videos I don't wanna be on my phone, but in this case I really wanted to get the information to you. It's very important. Again, being thorough reads as over-invested.
Caring about outcomes reads as desperate. Being thoughtful reads as try hard. Genuine interest is viewed as needy on the apps. And taking things seriously is just boring. So this is the red pill, guys. This is the real red pill. Once you understand this- When it comes to the online dating landscape, and even if you're going out and you have what it takes to meet women in person via cold approach, this is what you still need to internalize once you actually get their number and start texting them.
This is the real red pill because everything here are traits you want to have in your life. This is how you're going to actually have friends, have family members who like you and have relationships and be successful, be fit, everything you need to be successful and have a good life. But in dating, it's killing you.
It's why the lawyers and doctors are getting left on red on hinge, even though they're good looking and successful. And it's why the dude who hasn't showered in a couple of days is ungroomed, unkept, is just cleaning up on the apps. It's this energy. So we're trying to install with the guy app that bad boy energy, if you will, the energy of the guy who just doesn't care onto the successful dudes who do care and do have a lot to offer, but they're just everything they do have to offer and the reasons why is what's sabotaging them in the first place.
And it's the online medium, whether we're talking about texting or the online dating apps, it's the online medium to take it back to the introduction of this video that is inverting the signal. When it comes to the digital communication, everything, these five characteristics that have made you successful, this is what's now sabotaging you on the online dating landscape.
Hopefully this made sense. If you have any questions, drop a comment and we'll get back to you. We will answer any question you have on the command. Check out The Guy link in the description.
